How to Find the Top Divorce Lawyers

May 11, 2010

Finding the top divorce lawyers is no easy task, but I have a few pointers for you that should make it a little easier. First of all, you need to make sure you know what all your goals are, and what you are going to do with the divorce.

Once you have those set, you’re ready to start looking for a lawyer that can help you with those goals.
You need to look in the phone book and see what types of lawyers there are around your area. It is a lot better to find a lawyer that specializes in divorce than just any old lawyer. This shouldn’t be too much of a problem as there are probably plenty of divorce lawyers around you. Make a list of them all and start calling each of them. You want to have an interview with as many of them as possible to see what their personalities are like and what they do in different situations. This not only helps you meet them and see their personalities, but it also gives you a better idea of how all the different lawyers are different from each other, and you’ll have a better idea of what you’re really looking for.

After you have gone through this whole process, you should start going through your list and all the notes that you’ve made about each lawyer, and start weeding the bad ones out. There are definitely going to be lawyers in the group that you don’t want to hire, so you should just go ahead and immediately cross them off. It’s best not to even waste too much time in their office talking with them if you have the feeling that they aren’t going to be good for you. First impressions really do matter and now you’re the one that is making the judgement call.

The last step that you should go through is to check their references. If the lawyer doesn’t have any references, that means that he’s either new, or the people he’s dealt with in the past have nothing good to say about him. This is the kind of guy that you want to steer away from. A new layer might be just fine, but when it’s your life that is being dealt with, it’s better to go for someone with a little more experience. If you are able to talk with some references though, and they all say he’s one of the top divorce lawyers, go with him!
